Click on new message (top right) and you can send a message to friends. If missing items are in the toolbar palette then drag them back from the customize window on the toolbar.

The settings window will now appear. I played around with the display settings and found out that if you go over +115% display scaling, the home button can't be seen, or clicked on. Now obviously this reduces the functionality of the device as a phone somewhat!

Place a check mark beside computer and recycle bin and any other icons. I couldn't find my message icon. Drop to +115% (or less) and there's your home button right next to edge's refresh icon/button.
